Christ Cares 2014 update

Thanks for your prayer and help.

The Lord has been blessing our missionary efforts and we are very grateful.

I apologize that I have not been able to keep up with the blog posts, there is so much I hope to share – God’s blessings has been amazing!. We are understaffed so it has been difficult to get our website up to date – we do hope to do that soon. In the meantime:

1) Please visit my Facebook page and scroll down my timeline – you will see many pictures and videos of our activities.

2) Here is a copy of our updated brochure, please pass it along to Christians and churches that are not familiar with Christ Cares. Also please glance at our volunteer opportunities and see if there is a volunteer opportunity that you might be interested in.

3) We are completely updating our entire website. This should be done by April 1, 2014. We are really excited about this and it will contain detailed information, pictures, and videos of our urban missionary endeavors.  http://ChristCares.org    Please mark your calendar to visit us on April 1.

4) Please continue to pray for us and share any request you may have with us. PRAYER MAKES A DIFFERENCE! I’m so grateful that God hears and answers our prayers…   If you have any questions please give me a call,

In Christ,

Scott Reese

HAVE YOU EVER READ TOLSTOY??? To me he was just one of those authors that I knew I should know about, but knew very little. I just read his short story – WHERE LOVE IS, THERE GOD IS ALSO – Leo Tolstoy. It only takes 5 or 10 minutes to read… I THINK YOU WOULD ENJOY IT… I posted it on the ChristCares.org website – http://bodyofchristcares.christianinternetministry.com/christian_volunteer_tolstoy.html

The Goal of a Missionary…

is not just activities, programs, or even sharing the “GOOD NEWS” – it is also to make disciples, to empower people to do the work of the ministry.

Successful missionary endeavors continue long after the missionary. This is why we were excited to see over thirty people show up for an Evangelism Class to learn how to share their faith.

This training was held at New Life Baptist Church – those who are long time supporters of Missionary Scott Reese can rejoice that there is now a self sustaining church in a beautiful facility including a gymnasium that started from “scratch” in the projects of Ford Heights over 30 years ago.

Below is a video of singing from a recent Sunday Morning Service at New Life Baptist Church… As a missionary this brings me great joy to see a self sustaining church proclaiming their love to our Savior with all their heart, soul, & mind. I am also grateful that they have continued to be holistic in their ministry as is evidenced by them opening up the church every Monday Night to over 50 homeless mothers and children.

1) My (Scott’s) brother Lane is having trouble with his leukemia again and is going through a challenging time. The day before he found out, his wife (Marlina) lost her job and his state of health has made it difficult for Lane to work – so on top of the health concerns they have financial pressure. The week after they found out, they had a fire at his house and they lost everything in their bedroom.  He has already started chemo. There is a good chance that I will need to go down to Texas this December to do a stem cell transplant. This is a very serious situation & I’d appreciate your prayers. If you’d like to send him a note of encouragement or help, his address is: Lane Reese – 403 S. Main, Aubrey, Tx. 76227

2) We are in process of putting in place some new programs to share God’s love to the area’s homeless through the PADS program. PADS is a wonderful organization that uses churches to house the homeless one night a week, however there is no spiritual component to this. We are praying for wisdom and provision to inspire and empower these churches to add a voluntary Bible Study before or after this program. (More info in the article below)

Why a homeless person would not want their picture taken.

Ladies, did you ever have a bad hair day? Imagine yourself in some unusual situation – possibly a camping trip or an all day traveling experience and then someone takes out a camera and starts taking pictures of you… Now multiply this 100 fold and imagine what it would be like to be homeless, possibly unable to shower for days, being tired, weary, and stressed… you meet a pastor to help you & then he whips a camera and starts snapping pictures of you… This is a dilemma we face… our donors want to see pictures and video and these are very effective ways to share needs and inspire people to get involved… On the other hand, it can be disrespectful & demeaning to take a picture of a homeless person for a variety of reasons… they have pride and feelings too! Pray for wisdom for us – another consideration is that the Lord teaches us that we should do our “good deeds” in secret – this puts a missionary in an awkward position as far as to what degree to document the good deeds that he and the ministry are doing…

This being said do know we are committed to sharing as much video etc as possible. A couple times every month we post updates & pictures on what we are doing –  few ministries to do this, but we do want you to be aware that often it is not appropriate to photograph all our endeavors…

Last Tuesday morning early I was at the New Life Baptist Church of Chicago Heights for the PADS homeless program. It was a touching sight – 56 women and children slept on the gymnasium floor on mats because they were homeless… my heart goes out to them and we are looking at ways to help them spiritually and practically…I wish you could have seen it, I’m sure you would be impacted…  In addition to supporting Christ Cares to empower us to make a difference, A PRACTICAL WAY TO HELP IS TO PURCHASE AND COLLECT  WHITE  SOCKS AND TOILETRIES FOR US… THANKS… (soon we will need volunteers on Monday nights to help with this outreach, BUT WE DO HAVE AN IMMEDIATE NEED FOR A VOLUNTEER TO HELP ME TUESDAY MORNINGS FROM 5:45 a.m. TO 8:00 a.m.)

Christ Cares / Urban Missionary Scott Reese, Update & Prayer Requests 6/13/12

Wednesday Night Volunteers needed

On Wednesday evenings we work with a group (between 10 to 20) of grade school and junior high children for an evening of fun & Bible Study. We meet at East Hazel Crest Bible Church and we are in need of volunteers to help from 7 p.m to 8 p.m. – email Scott for additional information if you are interested. We are in need of the volunteers for the summer only – the Bible Church runs a wonderful Olympians program during the school year. We also have basketball practice from 5 to 6 p.m. Pictures below:

Fall Volunteers Needed

This Fall, Lord willing, we plan on partnering with New Life Baptist Church and start a couple new programs. We are in the planning stages and we also need to start lining up potential volunteers so we will know how many we can minister to. Tentatively we are thinking about having a after school Homework Help & Basketball program on Thursdays at about 3:30 p.m. (Grade School & Junior High). We also are thinking about having a weekly outreach (about 5:00 p.m.) to the homeless ladies and children who spend Monday nights at the church. We also need volunteers for a Bible and Basketball Program for High School kids on Wednesday nights about 6:00 p.m.

Scott Reese’s Upcoming Preaching Schedule:

  • 6/17/12 : Crete Reformed Church (Showing video of the Shelter Ministry) * We are very grateful that Crete Church’s V.B.S. Program is collecting snacks for our various programs and the ministries we resource.
  • 6/24/12 : Korean United Methodist Church * We are very grateful that this wonderful congregations has been partnering with us the past several years at our Taste of Reconciliation Worship Event and I am honored to have this opportunity to share.
  • 7/1/12 : East Hazel Crest Bible Church * My dad was pastor of this church when I was born – it is still kind of strange to preach at a place and see people who used to babysit me! The pastor and people of this congregation have been a big encouragement & help to me.
  • 7/8/12 : South Suburban Chinese Church * For well over 20 years I’ve had the privilege to minister to this wonderful congregation & have grown to love them dearly…we want to thank Parkview Church of Orland Park for allowing us to use their facility and Baptistery so we could have a Baptismal Service.  Please pray for Frankie as he proclaims his love and dedication to God through Baptism.
  • 7/15/12 : Rest Haven Nursing Home of South Holland. * I always look forward to sharing with these wonderful people…
  • Please pray that my message and my preaching will not necessarily be with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power. (1 Cor.2)

Praise & Prayer Requests

  • Please continue to pray for my (Scott’s) health & heart. I have been doing really well but earlier tonight I ran into problems – my Blood Pressure jumped up to 191 / 156 and my heart went out of rhythm. Please pray for healing and also wisdom on the next step – also please pray that if it is God’s plan for me to have an operation to fix this condition, that he will provide a way financially to have it done. We are grateful to Orland Park Christian Reformed Church who sent us an extra $500 this week to help with our medical expenses. June 20 update – Scott’s heart is back in rhythm and doing much better.
  •  Praise – a young lady that grew up at the Chinese Church is going into missions. I can not publicly give her name or where she is going but if you would be interested in supporting a dedicated young missionary to a needy field, than please contact me and I will give you additional information.
  • Please pray for my dear friend and co-laborer Carolyn. There has been a gang war in her neighborhood. The gangs lit the house across the street from her on fire and they  tried to kill her neighbor by shooting up their house. There is gunfire almost every night. She also fell and hurt her arm and had to have surgery tonight. She has been through so much (son and niece murdered etc.) and yet she has continued to reach out in love to the children of her community.
  • Praise – At New Life (the church the Lord blessed me to found over 30 years ago) they had been praying for a new member’s  adult children that they would come to church. The week I preached not only did she attend, but she also put her trust in Christ as her Savior!!! Praise the Lord – please pray for this new born Christian…
  • Praise – once again a Christian Business lady has made a significant & sacrificial donation to help Christ Cares. We also praise God for about 20 individuals and churches who donate faithfully on a monthly or quarterly basis – IN AN EARTHLY SENSE, OUR MINISTRY IS RESULT OF THEIR PARTNERSHIP!!!
  • This summer Scott will be going on deputation again – please pray that we will be able to raise the additional funds needed. Much of Scott’s missionary deputation was done in the late 1980’s. Now since the economy is bad and also over 25 years supporters drop off, so there is a strong need to increase our funding to meet our budget. We are also wanting to hire some part time staff this Fall to help us with our new programs. Please help us line up opportunities for us to share what Christ Cares is doing and how people can partner with us. Churches, small groups, Sunday School Classes, even a gathering of a few friends at your house would be wonderful! You can also make a one time donation or a monthly donation (that you can stop at any time) – HERE – CLICK TO DONATE TO CHRIST CARES
  • Finally please pray for spiritual victories. As missionaries we often just share the highlights and victories but there is also many difficulties and discouragements in urban ministry. Please pray for three young people that I have been working with for a couple years that God’s Word will penetrate their lives and change them. They recently did something really stupid and got in trouble with the law – I pray that this will be the last time the get in trouble with the police and that they will live for the Lord.    We were encouraged that we had a couple new families join the church at New Life. A wolf in sheep’s clothing got to them and persuaded in false doctrine and they are fading out of the church. One of the urban ministers I try to encourage is going through a very difficult time.  David Gills who I co-founded New Life with is now the Senior pastor there. He had Kidney failure and  now has to have dialysis three times a week. I am really concerned about one of the families that was staying at the Homeless Shelter we help. It was a single mother with nine precious children and she is pregnant with a 10th. Anyway, she evidently has some issues and was kicked out of the shelter (They must maintain order & rules) – I am quite worried for these children. I recently got word that a young man that we’ve worked with is in jail for shooting someone in the leg. His father was murdered when he was young. At age nine he witnessed his cousin being shot to death and then his  mother was stabbed to death in front of him as he tried to fight off the attacker. Two or three months latter he was sitting next to his brother when his brother was shot in the head and killed. After all this happened we would have this young man come over to our house one evening a week for about a year, just to try to show him some love and encouragement. He is a gifted young man and I know God still has a plan for him – please pray that God will change his heart. This morning I witnessed a minor crime and then had to go look for the suspects. I also got a phone call from one of the probable gang families I help that I dread returning because I know it is probably going to draw me into a high pressure and possibly dangerous situation. I still struggle myself from time to time with some Post Traumatic Stress issues from the 100 or so murders that I’ve been through these past 30 + years. Please pray for me, my family (my wife and kids have been through many hardships due to my ministry) and our volunteers and we ask God to make us a vessel of His Love “in the city.”

Donate School Supplies for Urban Ministry

Please take a few minutes and view this video. Christ Cares is a 501c3 Christian non profit organization that believes the LOVE OF GOD needs to be both proclaimed and demonstrated!

The economic crisis has affected most of us here in America, however, the impact has been devistating in the urban areas. School is about to start in a few weeks and many families are struggling to get the needed school supplies. Christ Cares is collecting school supplies to help met this need and also as a paractical demonstration of God’s love. For over 30 years, our Director, Rev. Scott Reese has been an urban missionary. Please prayerfully consider making a difference and help us secure school supplies and also “share” this video with your friends.

A list of our needed supplies is also posted below.

GOOD NEWS DAY – Encouraging Christians to share God’s love the day before Easter

CHRIST CARES is sponsoring “GOOD NEWS DAY” on the day before Easter.

Easter provides a wonderful opportunity to share God’s love to your community. Many people who do not attend church regularly are open to attend Easter Services.

Each church tailors the program to what they are most comfortable with. Basically the idea is to connect with those families that live near the church and let them know if they don’t have a church home you’d love to have them attend your Easter Service.

Some churches knock on the doors. We will have “survey cards” available that ask questions such as: What do you think is the community’s greatest needs? How do you think our church can best service the community? and How can we pray for you?

Some churches choose just to drop off information in a door hanger.

There is a prayer breakfast Saturday March 3, 2010; 9:15 a.m. at East Hazel Crest Bible Church : 1204 173rd Street, East Hazel Crest IL 60429. Mapquest the church HERE.

I, (Scott Reese) will briefly share the WORD and then after some prayer the participants will visit those homes near their church and people they think might be interested in attending Easter Services.

I want to encourage you and your church to participate. We are commanded to GO and share the GOOD NEWS. There are many ways to do this. This is one way. I personally think that it would be sad for someone to live just a few blocks from a church and never receive a Gospel witness. Many of you reading this have grown up attending church. We must remember that for most people this is not the case. God in His mercy has chosen us to represent Him and to GO and share the love of God.

CHRIST CARES will provide Easter Tracts and soon will post on this website survey cards and a sample letter that the pastor can write to go out with the materials.

Below is a flier for the event – we will soon post more information.

We are very grateful for Campus Crusade’s Agape Center for donating 50 Thanksgiving “Boxes of Love” to CHRIST CARES. Following the Agape Center’s guidlines we targeted families that were not only struggling financially but also were unchurched. The goal was to use this Turkey, meal, and Christian Materials as a demonstration of God’s love to connect with unchurched families.  I am especially grateful to the volunteers who helped with the distribution mostly in Ford Heights, Chicago Heights, and Robbins: Jeff Bryson, Fred Edmond (Sr. & Jr.), Tommie Beasley, Sam Williams, Bryan Bell, David Gills, and Robin Quin.

CHRIST CARES  also sponsored our monthly Community Outreach Dinner in Roseland and are grateful for the Liccar family for providing this meal. Please pray for the Gallilee Baptist Church as they endeavor to share God’s love in Roseland (Chicago).

Christian volunteers

Christ Cares Volunteers Fred Edmond (Sr. & Jr.)

We are also in need of donations of canned hams and food for additional families that we work with that are struggling financially at this time. Please let us know if you can help.

Sunday (11/22/09) was a tremendous blessing for my daughter Katie and me. One of the families we distributed a “Box of Love” to on Saturday had 10 children living there. On Sunday, Katie and I brought 4 of the older children to church. Afterwards we spent some time with them and shared the “GOOD NEWS” of God’s great love and plan of salvation. We praise the Lord as they were already “planted” and “watered” in that they were already prepared and hungering to know God and ready to accept His marvelous gift of salvation. We praise the Lord for “child like faith”. Please pray for Briana, Bridget, Earline, and Margaret.

Sunday afternoon Lisa, Katie, and I went to the home of one of our faithful supporters, Loraine Smith. Although Christ Cares has many people who donate throughout the year, the vast majority of support comes from just about 15 individuals, couples, or churches that support us on a monthly/regular basis. We are very grateful to this special crowd of partners and want to get to know them (you) better. Lisa is back helping me with donor relations, and we’d love to have the opportunity to fellowship with you sometime.  Anyway, we had a wonderful afternoon playing “Crowns”, chatting, and munching on snacks. Loraine is 83 and now has some health issues, so I’d appreciate your prayers for her.

A special note about the AGAPE CENTER: For those not familiar with them, they are a wonderful urban ministry impacting hundreds of lives in the Roseland area and I highly reccommend them. (More info on the Agape Center – HERE). They have been a blessing to me and my ministry endeavors for probably over 20 years! Please pray for them, the economic downturn has hurt most non profits, I know they had to drastically cut back on their Turkey distribution this year. Also, there was a very high profile gang related murder in their parking lot. You probably saw this on the news as it was a national story. I am personally grateful to God in that the afternoon that this happened I had planned on stopping by the Agape Center to try to see Milton, but God changed my mind and I missed that event.  Unfortunately I’ve been involved with many similar murder catastrophies and know the physical, emotional, and even spiritual drain these situations can be. I still struggle with post traumatic stress issues to some degree over some of the multitude of murder situations I’ve been through. Anyway, I want to encourage you to have your church pray for Milton Massie and the dedicated staff of the Agape Center. Pray that the Lord will protect them, refresh them, and empower them to continue being a beacon of light and love to that community.
