Evangelism class 11/03/12

The Goal of a Missionary…

is not just activities, programs, or even sharing the “GOOD NEWS” – it is also to make disciples, to empower people to do the work of the ministry.

Successful missionary endeavors continue long after the missionary. This is why we were excited to see over thirty people show up for an Evangelism Class to learn how to share their faith.

This training was held at New Life Baptist Church – those who are long time supporters of Missionary Scott Reese can rejoice that there is now a self sustaining church in a beautiful facility including a gymnasium that started from “scratch” in the projects of Ford Heights over 30 years ago.

Below is a video of singing from a recent Sunday Morning Service at New Life Baptist Church… As a missionary this brings me great joy to see a self sustaining church proclaiming their love to our Savior with all their heart, soul, & mind. I am also grateful that they have continued to be holistic in their ministry as is evidenced by them opening up the church every Monday Night to over 50 homeless mothers and children.

1) My (Scott’s) brother Lane is having trouble with his leukemia again and is going through a challenging time. The day before he found out, his wife (Marlina) lost her job and his state of health has made it difficult for Lane to work – so on top of the health concerns they have financial pressure. The week after they found out, they had a fire at his house and they lost everything in their bedroom.  He has already started chemo. There is a good chance that I will need to go down to Texas this December to do a stem cell transplant. This is a very serious situation & I’d appreciate your prayers. If you’d like to send him a note of encouragement or help, his address is: Lane Reese – 403 S. Main, Aubrey, Tx. 76227

2) We are in process of putting in place some new programs to share God’s love to the area’s homeless through the PADS program. PADS is a wonderful organization that uses churches to house the homeless one night a week, however there is no spiritual component to this. We are praying for wisdom and provision to inspire and empower these churches to add a voluntary Bible Study before or after this program. (More info in the article below)

Why a homeless person would not want their picture taken.

Ladies, did you ever have a bad hair day? Imagine yourself in some unusual situation – possibly a camping trip or an all day traveling experience and then someone takes out a camera and starts taking pictures of you… Now multiply this 100 fold and imagine what it would be like to be homeless, possibly unable to shower for days, being tired, weary, and stressed… you meet a pastor to help you & then he whips a camera and starts snapping pictures of you… This is a dilemma we face… our donors want to see pictures and video and these are very effective ways to share needs and inspire people to get involved… On the other hand, it can be disrespectful & demeaning to take a picture of a homeless person for a variety of reasons… they have pride and feelings too! Pray for wisdom for us – another consideration is that the Lord teaches us that we should do our “good deeds” in secret – this puts a missionary in an awkward position as far as to what degree to document the good deeds that he and the ministry are doing…

This being said do know we are committed to sharing as much video etc as possible. A couple times every month we post updates & pictures on what we are doing –  few ministries to do this, but we do want you to be aware that often it is not appropriate to photograph all our endeavors…

Last Tuesday morning early I was at the New Life Baptist Church of Chicago Heights for the PADS homeless program. It was a touching sight – 56 women and children slept on the gymnasium floor on mats because they were homeless… my heart goes out to them and we are looking at ways to help them spiritually and practically…I wish you could have seen it, I’m sure you would be impacted…  In addition to supporting Christ Cares to empower us to make a difference, A PRACTICAL WAY TO HELP IS TO PURCHASE AND COLLECT  WHITE  SOCKS AND TOILETRIES FOR US… THANKS… (soon we will need volunteers on Monday nights to help with this outreach, BUT WE DO HAVE AN IMMEDIATE NEED FOR A VOLUNTEER TO HELP ME TUESDAY MORNINGS FROM 5:45 a.m. TO 8:00 a.m.)

A Day of Blessing – Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012

The fOllowing is a missionary report for christ cares on saturday, oct. 20, 2012

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

On Saturday morning the day started with:

NEW life baptist church – family conference

I (Scott) taught a seminar to help prepare young adults for adulthood – i.e. transitions into marriage, parenthood, & the temptations of no longer living at home with their parents.

roseland community outreach meal

We thank the Liccar family from Crete Church for providing a wonderful meal for a Community Outreach Meal at Galilee Baptist Church of Chicago. This is an area with much homelessness and poverty. We empower the church to proclaim and demonstrate the Love of God. Rev. Bell shared his testimony of how God changed his life from a drug dealer to a preacher. It was powerful and many lives were encouraged and then they were blessed with a delicious meal.

Rev. david gills & children’s hunger fund

Rev. David Gills and myself visited the Children’s Hunger Fund where New Life Baptist Church had a team of volunteers being trained to learn how to use CHF’s resources to feed  hungry families in the Chicago Heights area.

While there I was reunited with Mary Compton, a dedicated Christian who is a reporter/photographer for The Chicago Heights Patch. (Children’s Hunger Fund Article – HERE) Soon they plan on doing a story on Christ Cares – Amen!

Besides these three events Saturday, we were blessed that once again the

car ministry of orland park christian reformed church

Helped someone CHRIST CARES is ministering to, to get a car. This is a wonderful ministry – if you are considering donating your car, then please contact me and I’ll put you in touch with them. The Director, Bruce Harnew, is a gifted and dedicated Christian and I am very grateful for his friendship and how we closely work together. Pamesha, is the mother of some of the children we minister to on Wednesday evenings (a Basketball Program & also a Bible Study/fun time). They did not own a car and this donation will be a tremendous blessing to this family.

on a sad / tragic note – while listening to the news on saturday, i heard about the sentencing of the teenagers who shot a couple children in roseland two years ago.

Ariana Jones and Tanaja Stokes, cute young girls only about the age of 7 were jump roping and practicing cheers in front of their house when shots rang out from a nearby gang war. Tragically Tanaja was shot in the head and killed while holding her mother’s hand who was trying to move her to safety. Ariana was also shot in the head but survived after much time in the hospital. (News articles about this are HERE, HERE, & HERE.)

I had met these precious girls – they attended youth activities sponsored by Christ Cares. There aunt, Caroline Zigglar, (of Roseland Christian Ministries) is a dear friend that some of you have met when she gave her testimony at some of our events. It is so sad that there is so much violence around the drug trade and gangs. Economic renewal would go a long way towards helping this problem but the greatest need is for spiritual renewal. Please pray for us and other Christian Ministries as we share the HOPE AND GOOD NEWS OF THE GOSPEL in urban Chicagoland.

It is very sad that I have personally known probably over 100 people who have been murdered… urban problems are great, but our Gods is greater… please pray for Ariana & the relatives of these girls. There is still much gunfire, especially at night – Caroline requested special prayer for safety some months ago after the gangs started a fire in the house across the street from her and then “shot up” the house beside hers…

(10/26/12 update – I talked with Carolyn yesterday – the gangs just shot up her relatives homes – they do have police protection temporarily, but we look to God to keep them safe… she also knew personally two people who were murdered this past week – please keep this family in prayer)

tonight, when you lay your head on your pillow, thank God that you live in a safe neighborhood, and then let your heart and thoughts turn to those who live only a few minutes from your home, but live in a completely different world – pray for them and be open to let God use you to be part of the solution…

“Glad Pastor Scott is still here” – THANK YOU for supporting Christ Cares

Scott Reese has been an urban missionary for more than 30 years! Sisters Vernita and Trina share how “Pastor Scott” was there for them while they were children struggling with the pressures of extreme poverty and urban life. Now they thank those who make the ministry of Christ Cares possible.

Urban Missionary Scott Reese did much of his deputation (fund raising) in the late 1980’s. Now much of his support base is quite elderly and many have had to reduce or drop their support (& many have passed on to heaven). Because of this and the present effects of the economy, there is now a strong need for new supporters for Christ Cares.

Please prayerfully consider being a monthly supporter of Christ Cares. Also please pass on our information to the Missions Committee of your church. All church budgets are tight due to the economy, but for that very reason, (an economic crisis that is hurting many people, especially those who were already poor) it may make sense to add a little to the budget to help a ministry that is reaching out to some the most economically hard hit areas of Chicagoland.

Ministering to the poor was a central concern of the early church. Just like in the parable of the Good Samaritan, it is never convienent or easy to help those in need but it is pleasing to our Savior and it does glorify God.

Like the Good Samaritan, a couple decades ago, a handful of Christians decided to make a difference and not to pass by the needs of urban chicagoland. Because of their partnership, a multitude of lives have been touched!

The economic needs of urban chicagoland has increased, but the greatest needs are spiritual not material. I believe it is important for the ministry of Christ Cares to continue and we are praying that the Lord will raise up partners to have a heart for the people of “the city” and who like the Good Samaritan will respond with an offering of time and finances.

Vernita and a multitude of others are glad that “Pastor Scott” is still ministering – I pray that the Lord will soften hearts of others to continue to make the ministry of Christ Cares possible…

Over 1,000 Urban Children receive School Supplies!!!

Thanks to generous donations from Christians and area churches, School Supplies were donated to over 1,000 urban youth. We are grateful to Bob Stine and Elim Ministries for networking with us and allowing us to greatly increase our annual ministry project. We were able to bless children in Ford Heights, Chicago Heights, Robbins, and Chicago including EVERY GRADE SCHOOL AND MIDDLE SCHOOL CHILD FROM FORD HEIGHTS.

We would also like to thank First Reformed Church of Lansing, Crete Church, Hillside Community Church, Calvary Church of Orland Park, the Agape Center, and the other area Churches and Christians who donated School Supplies.

We cosponsored a Back to School Rally in Roseland at Galilee Baptist Church and were able to bless Roseland Christian Ministries Homeless Shelter.

Children were excited, parents were grateful, urban ministers were empowered, and God was Glorified by this display of Christian Compassion.

Chinese Church Thank You – Christ Cares Missions Update July (first half)

South suburban mandarin chinese church – july 8, 2012 had a baptismal service for Frankie and Daniel.

I was honored to do the Baptismal service for these two outstanding Christian young men, Daniel and Frankie. We want to thank Parkview Church for allowing us to use their auditorium and Baptistry for this special occasion. I (Scott Reese) have had the privilege of helping the Chinese for over 25 years on a regular basis. After the service Sister Pauline spoke some kind words.

other highlights of early july:

July 1 – I had the privilege of preaching at East Hazel Crest Bible ChurchThis is a wonderful church that is dear to my heart. When I was born, my dad, Ed Reese was the pastor there. This is also the church that we partner with on Wednesday nights with a youth program. Please pray for this church and their dedicated pastor, Rev. Sam Dallessandro.

July 7 – Monthly Men’s Bible StudyEvery first Saturday of the Month, Christ Cares sponsors a Multicultural Men’s Bible Study and Breakfast. We meet at 8:30 a.m. at New Life Baptist Church of Chicago Heights (1633 Wilson Ave.). After a time of food and fellowship we have a Bible Study that is followed with a time of sharing prayer requests and prayer. Please help spread the word about this encouraging event. It is also a good reflection of the Body of Christ as Christians of different races and denominations come together to encourage each other.

On July 12, I had the privilege of participating in the Board Meeting of Christian Service MinistriesChristian Service Ministries is a ministry of the Christian Reformed Churches in the Chicago South designed to help the local churches work with their local communities at their point of need.  Christian Service Ministries offers training sessions, resources, and encouragement for church deacons and all those with enthusiasm for ministries in their church and community.  Please check out their website for a list of upcoming helpful seminars. I also highly recommend their Resource Guide that lists helpful resources for those in need. CSM is led by Jan Visser and she a been a tremendous help and encouragement to me and Christ Cares through the years. We would also appreciate your prayers for Jan’s nephew, Caleb Vander Ploeg, who was in a very serious car accident.

Sunday, July 15 – I had the privilege of preaching at Rest Haven Nursing Home. I always enjoy my time sharing with these  dear saints… I also want to thank Mrs. Blumer for playing the piano – I am not a gifted singer to say the least so it really helps to have a piano if I lead singing!

volunteers needed! this saturday, july 21 we need drivers (& vans if possible) to help with transportation.

We are blessed and thankful that Orland Park Christian Reformed Church is sponsoring a “Make a Difference Day” (1 day VBS program) at their church and allowing us to bring about 100 homeless and urban youth. Transportation is often one of our biggest challenges so please contact us if you can help. Many thanks to Cindy Vander Laan for planning and coordinating this event! Please pray for us that everyone will have a wonderful time and also that we will all be refreshed not just physically but also spiritually. It is going to be a hot day so I’d also appreciate your prayers for my heart to stay in rhythm and also for my Blood Pressure to stay in check.

Christ Cares Urban Missionary Report – 6/30/12

Crete Reformed Church's VBS had a special project to help Urban Missionary Scott Reese and ChristCares.org

Crete Church’s VBS Children collected snacks and juice boxes to help Urban Missionary Scott Reese and Christ Cares.org

Friday june 22, 2012

A special thanks to Crete Reformed Church. Their VBS children collected Granola Bars and Juice Boxes to help us share Jesus to urban children. During the summer we provide snacks along with Bible Programs for 60 to 100 kids and homeless moms. In the Fall Lord willing we will be starting a few new programs and will need weekly snacks for up to 200 per week! We hope other churches will collect snacks & juice boxes to help us with this. It is really nice to have the snacks  as a practical demonstration of Christ’s love while we teach God’s love. A special thanks to the children, their parents, Carol Milsap and all the volunteers.

Christ Cares has Ministry Boxes available to place donations to help urban youth.

Christ Cares has Ministry Donation Boxes available for your church to collect snacks, juice boxes, and raffle gifts to help Christ Cares demonstrate God’s love while teaching about God’s love.

Ministry Donation Boxes are available for your Church.

Saturday, June 23 – Schepel Buick/GMC Car Show.

Schepel Buick/GMC car show

Schepel Buick/GMC Charity car show – to benefit Elim Ministries. This will make it possible for Elim Ministries to work with Christ Cares to donate school supplies to over 600 children in economically hard hit areas.

We brought a van load of kids to the Schepel Buick/GMC Charity Car Show. Tom Van Prooyen, the owner of Schepel Buick/GMC started this charity event to aid Elim Ministries – a wonderful ministry that helps individuals with disabilities to be equipped to achieve their highest God-given potential. Elim will purchase school supplies and hire their people to put together school supply packs.

This fund raiser will enable Elim Ministries to work in conjunction with  Christ Cares to provide school supplies for all the children of Ford Heights and also Wilson School of Chicago Heights. A special thanks to Bob Stine for making this possible as well as my friend Ken Lautenbach for introducing me to Bob.
