Cities Arise! Thank you Agape Center, Here’s Life Inner City & CRU

The agape center, a ministry of “here’s Life inner city” / cru (formally called campus crusade for christ) has been a tremendous help and blessing to us through the years…

I have been blessed to be one of the longest ministry partners of the Agape Center. I can remember attending a fund raiser for the Agape Center with Bill Bright in the early 1980’s. It was a privilege to meet him and I was honored that he sent me an autographed copy of his Holy Spirit Book when I graduated from Bible College.

Brother Austin Smith was the Director when we first began partnering with the Agape Center.  Rev. Milton Massie was the next Director and now Marc Henkle and Brad Harry  are co directors.  I can not list the many ways the Agape Center has helped us and empowered us to share the good news in the “City”.

Urban Ministry is very rewarding but it is also very difficult and challenging at times. You are surrounded by needs but in the natural you have very few resources. The Agape Center has had many programs that have empowered us to proclaim and demonstrate God’s love. My favorite is the “Boxes of Love” program. Every year for probably a couple decades they have provided us Thanksgiving Baskets to be used for evangelistic purposes. Hundreds of families have been helped. This year as the direct result of the Boxes of Love, we had over 20 visitors at church. I was interviewed on Christian TV with Milton Massie for the Box of Love Program  by Jerry Rose in the late 1980’s or early 90’s – a link to that video is – HERE .

The Agape Center has also provided many other resources such as Homeless Aid Kits, School Supplies, Easter Baskets etc. as well as multiple training’s and seminars. They inspired me to hold our own Evangelism Training this past year and we had 35 people come out to learn how to share their faith. This year they have also sent one of their interns, Toni Seller to help us with our outreach to the homeless… she has been a blessing…

I can remember while I was serving as Senior Pastor of New Life Baptist Church we would always look forward to having the “Summer in the City” College students help us for a week or two. It is great having reinforcements and this allowed us to run special programs and reach many children for Christ…

As I look back at the many years of help and blessing that we received from the Agape Center I want to mention that beyond all the programs the relationship with the staff has made such a difference in my life. Milton Massie and Marc Hinkle are close friends and their lives have been an inspiration to me. The other dedicated staff members have also been an encouragement and blessing. I want to encourage you to attend their annual fund raising banquet coming up on April 20 – you can sign get more info and make your registration on their website: HERE .

Christian Volunteers – Please read, an encouraging reminder that we never know how God will use us…

Amazing story how God used a volunteer's simple act of faithfulness to change thousands of lives

Amazing story how God used a volunteer’s simple act of faithfulness to change thousands of lives…

Many years ago, it was a cold February night in Chicago. A volunteer for the Pacific Garden Mission had to make a decision if he was to brave the cold weather or stay home – his position was not considered important by many – he was not a preacher, he just stood outside the mission and encouraged needy people to go inside & get help. He went…

Earlier that night a man named Mel Trotter was despondent and depressed due to alcoholism and poor choices – he had lost his job, his marriage was messed up and he had gone to Chicago for a drinking binge. Finally, suicidal & out of money he sold his shoes in a tavern to get a final drink. He then got directions to Lake Michigan where he figured he would jump in and commit suicide… On his way, he passed the the Pacific Garden Mission & the volunteer encouraged him & pulled him in the mission… there he heard the gospel preached and that even though he was “messed up” God still loved him…

He trusted Christ as his savior & God transformed his life… soon he began to share his testimony and became a minister… God used him in a powerful way… He helped start the Mel Trotter Rescue Mission & Church in Grand Rapids Michigan… Soon he was used to start missions in many cities across America and became an evangelist and thousands of people came to the Lord as a result of his ministry…. This is a great reminder to us on the importance of our volunteer activities, even if it doesn’t seem to be an important job, you never know how God will bless your faithfulness… Thousands were saved as the result of that volunteer being there & Mel Trotter becoming a Christian…

I WANT TO TELL YOU THE STORY OF JUST ONE OF THE THOUSANDS THAT WERE SAVED. A 13 year old boy visited the Mel Trotter Church in Grand Rapids … he saw a choir perform & asked if he could join – the director shared that it was a Christian choir & then the 13 year old boy put his trust in Christ as his savior… that boy grew up to be a missionary, pastor, evangelist, Bible College teacher, & author… that man was my Father Ed Reese, who along with my mom raised me in the Christian Faith & now I (Scott Reese) have been an urban missionary for over 30 years…

LAST FRIDAY NIGHT (12/28/12) I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO PREACH AT THE PACIFIC GARDEN MISSION… where this all began… it was an amazing night and an opportunity… I’m not sure how many were there, I’m guessing over 400… Katie Reese sang with the youth group of Christian Heritage Church… After preaching a gospel message, We had about 7 indicate that they would like to become Christians – we prayed with them & encouraged them to talk with the mission staff… Please pray for them… Praise the Lord …

“Glad Pastor Scott is still here” – THANK YOU for supporting Christ Cares

Scott Reese has been an urban missionary for more than 30 years! Sisters Vernita and Trina share how “Pastor Scott” was there for them while they were children struggling with the pressures of extreme poverty and urban life. Now they thank those who make the ministry of Christ Cares possible.

Urban Missionary Scott Reese did much of his deputation (fund raising) in the late 1980’s. Now much of his support base is quite elderly and many have had to reduce or drop their support (& many have passed on to heaven). Because of this and the present effects of the economy, there is now a strong need for new supporters for Christ Cares.

Please prayerfully consider being a monthly supporter of Christ Cares. Also please pass on our information to the Missions Committee of your church. All church budgets are tight due to the economy, but for that very reason, (an economic crisis that is hurting many people, especially those who were already poor) it may make sense to add a little to the budget to help a ministry that is reaching out to some the most economically hard hit areas of Chicagoland.

Ministering to the poor was a central concern of the early church. Just like in the parable of the Good Samaritan, it is never convienent or easy to help those in need but it is pleasing to our Savior and it does glorify God.

Like the Good Samaritan, a couple decades ago, a handful of Christians decided to make a difference and not to pass by the needs of urban chicagoland. Because of their partnership, a multitude of lives have been touched!

The economic needs of urban chicagoland has increased, but the greatest needs are spiritual not material. I believe it is important for the ministry of Christ Cares to continue and we are praying that the Lord will raise up partners to have a heart for the people of “the city” and who like the Good Samaritan will respond with an offering of time and finances.

Vernita and a multitude of others are glad that “Pastor Scott” is still ministering – I pray that the Lord will soften hearts of others to continue to make the ministry of Christ Cares possible…

Over 1,000 Urban Children receive School Supplies!!!

Thanks to generous donations from Christians and area churches, School Supplies were donated to over 1,000 urban youth. We are grateful to Bob Stine and Elim Ministries for networking with us and allowing us to greatly increase our annual ministry project. We were able to bless children in Ford Heights, Chicago Heights, Robbins, and Chicago including EVERY GRADE SCHOOL AND MIDDLE SCHOOL CHILD FROM FORD HEIGHTS.

We would also like to thank First Reformed Church of Lansing, Crete Church, Hillside Community Church, Calvary Church of Orland Park, the Agape Center, and the other area Churches and Christians who donated School Supplies.

We cosponsored a Back to School Rally in Roseland at Galilee Baptist Church and were able to bless Roseland Christian Ministries Homeless Shelter.

Children were excited, parents were grateful, urban ministers were empowered, and God was Glorified by this display of Christian Compassion.
